I have a bit of a different style here, so give me feedback on the aesthetics.

In 2300s of OTL, an Anti-American terrorist organization is able to obtain super weapons. A freak time vortex sends a few of the groups members back in time to 1920s Brazil. Believing that this is evidence that they were sent here to prevent the U.S. from bombing their homeland in the future, they hope aboard a plane to the U.S..

Unfortunately, the incompetency of one of their members gets most of the group (and the super weapons) caught. Another one escapes, and is able to poison FDR, using poison techniques 'from the future!', while two more live new lives with new identities. The FDR assassin goes on to attempt to kill Hitler as well, but only makes Hitler bed-ridden for two months (and occasionally prone to seizures). One last member of the group eventually defects and teaches the U.S. government how to make more superweapons.

The premature death of FDR, the election in 1932 of Al Smith (subsequent election of an isolationist Republican in 1940), the decision of the Japanese to invade Australia rather than attack Hawaii, the fact that WWII started 7 months late, and the successful British landing on the coast of Europe in 1942 (right after the Nazis had kicked them off of the continent), all helped to delay the U.S. entry into the War.

After Stalin died, and the Soviets descended into Civil War as the Germans were marching closer to Moscow, further successful allied offenses and rebellions in occupied territory helped to contain Germany.

When, in 1945 (after a Democrat was elected '44), the U.S. entered the war, and bombed the heck outta Japan, with the new Sun Bombs (actually, the materials needed to build a sun bomb were widely available, but the reactor that the group brought back in time allowed the government to build more).

The U.S. government, through diplomatic arm twisting and turning part of German-occupied Italy into a desert, convinced the other allied governments to hand over their colonial territories. Afterwards they were immediately turned into 'Republics under an American mandate'. A military campaign and similar diplomatic arm twisting brough Latin America under the same conditions. Eventually, due to the sheer profitability of being a U.S. mandate, Turkey, Iran, and Siam all signed up.

Now the year is 2070. The world, is increasingly, a mess.

The United States of America, is and remains the number one power across the world. Having pretty much lost the appetite for any continued expansion, it lacks many in the way of enemies abroad, despite its huge power. But it is racked with revolts in the mandates stretching from Venezuela, to Iran, the Indochina. Most of the governments in the mandates are shaky illiberal democracies, or much worse. The U.S. military is still a huge thing, with highly advanced technologies now designed more for fighting revolts rather than opposing armies. The U.S. is rarely violent, though when it is, it really is. Venezeula (where all the captured rebels aren't acquitted are sent) is 15% Muslim, what with all the Jihadist rebels.
The U.S. homeland itself, is rather whiter than OTL, having shipped most of the black population back to Africa, to be the appointed elites of African nations, and most of the Latino or Asian immigrants that were Americanized enough back to where their ancestors came from. Politically, America is still a two-party system, with parties split more along geographic (i.e. North vs South) rather than ideological lines. The media, and coporate business are BIG.

Across the world, American norms are in vogue. MTV-style shows espousing drugs, drinking, sex, and rock n'roll will appear right next to wholesome preachy evangelical shows are (usually only in English) televisions. Diabeties is a big problem in much of America's colonies, what with all the McDonald's knockoffs (the original McDonald's split off into three seperate but nearly identical corporations, each with a greater budget than the entire spending on health in many of the colonies). Americanized burritos are now in Mexico, and Black baptist churches essentially have near absolute authority in the Central African Mandate, right south of a U.S. puppet who claims to be a descendent of Mohammed, while the Amazon is divided between American corporations. The culture wars, and huge debates about gay marriage, abortion, gun ownership, the morality of cloning, and euthanasia are heard full blast on radios across the world. These days, the media is increasingly propaganda, not really the government's propaganda, but the propaganda of interest groups. The news network funded by Burger King will tout studies that prove that organic stuff is nonsense, as Evangelical and Atheist networks bash eachother. There is a large wealth gap, but it doesn't many since there are lots of people who've quickly gone from rags to riches, and just as many who've gone the other way around. Protective tariffs and a world system to designed to profit America have made this country a lot richer on average than OTL. States and Company rights are big deals.

America still leads the world in technology, even if its far behind other nations in terms of solar power (it has all the oil it wants). America controls more of the moon than any other nation. Cables that are wide as a hair, long as a continent, and tough as steel, criss-croos the world, delivering telephone calls and a series of primitive internets (plural because some of these internets can't access websites on others. Here, a few different companies run their own internets).

America has the self esteem of a 12 year old: always incredibly boastful and confident, yet on the inside consistenly paranoid and on the lookout for signs of its own demise.

The rest of the world, is fearful of America.

Canada is a lot richer, thanks to millions of Americans who got sick of this country leaving for universal healthcare. Washington mostly thinks of that frozen waste as a reservation for hippy-types. Australia is like a second Canada.

Europe, liberated from the Nazis not by the U.S., which was busy empire building, but by the British and Free French, is rather Leftist by the standards of OTL (though it also has a bit of a far-right movement opposed to the Soviets and the Americans, one that is gaining traction). Europe is trying to keep up with the rest of the world in terms of technology, though it only has a few moon and mars bases. Europe is fairly democratic and leftist, though a bit more militant than OTL. Large numbers of refugees from the American controlled Middle East and Africa, though enriched more so than OTL, have come to Europe.

Japan has mostly returned to isolation, and exists at a standard of living comparable to OTL '50s America. The Emperor continues to rule as a god, having gotten rid of the diet and the prime minister.

India, is in a bit of a precaurious position. It was an American mandate until the economic crash of '72, when it quitely slipped away. For the first decade of its independence, it fought with right-wing Hindu and left wing Marxist rebels, before managing a centralized, stable, and independent state. In a short war with the U.S., Washington pried Balochistan, Ceylon, and Burma back from Delhi. India has continued to benefit from America, particularly from huge advances in agricultural production and genetic modification in food. Today, India is slightly richer than OTL India in 2013, and increasingly booming. It's a bit of a neutral power, as the only nation independent of the U.S. to still trade in large amounts with the U.S.

South Africa, though it abandoned Apartheid, is still under a nasty hard right wing Anti-U.S. dictatorship. Though blacks haven't risen all the way to the top (yet) many are now in important positions in the government. The government now emphasizes the importance and brilliance of all South Africans, and the evilness of all Americans.

Lastly, the Soviets and the Chinese exist as possibly a second superpower (when they combine their forces). Mao Zedong and other Chinese communists were killed by the Japanese, and the rest of the Communists merged with the Nationalists to form a new China. The Republic of China, gets along well with the Soviets. The Soviets themselves were able to pull out of their civil war in order to grab some territory in Europe, but not as much as they could've. In Eurasia, solar power has been extensively researched, and is hugely profitable. In both of these countries, the state essentially controls everything, and the current leader is a clone of the previous one. The Sino-Soviet alliance has built almost as many space bases as the U.S., and is testing its own sonic-based superweapons in Central Asia right now......
