Osman-
The world of Osman is divided, and in the midst of an ongoing struggle between the two great powers; the Ottoman Empire, and the Commonwealth of America.
The larger of the two, the Ottoman Empire, has had several good centuries. In the 16th century it conquered Persia, and was later able to convert most of the Balkans to Islam. Everything all the way to Austria and Poland is still under Ottoman control (although Transylvania was spun off as a tributary and de-facto reservation for Balkan Christians). The Arab Peninsula, Crimea, East Africa down to Zanzibar, and Iranian plateau are all under Turkish control. In the West, the French Kingdom in exile (the home territory fell to revolution), controls OTL Western Algeria and is another tributary (along with Morocco), and these days is mostly filled with French-speaking Muslims. A belt of independent African sultans exists all the way down to the Congo, and there are more Ottoman Allies in Central Asia, Northern India, and Indonesia (as well as Muslim rebels in Western China and Burma). Even non-muslim former European colonies like Brazil, Biafra, or Andhra have local despots that rely on Ottoman cash to stay functioning.
These days, there exists a somewhat powerful and functional Ottoman Parliament. The Sultan is still more powerful, but generally chooses to let Parliament (elected mostly by the ruling classes) run things. Muslim Clerics and the army are also less important influences in running things.
The Ottomans, though they had a rough 19th century, have been on an extraordinary comeback (this helps that Europe really ruined itself in the Pan-European War). Most of the European governments underwent some form of transition to Directist (This world’s Fascism, hugely based on racial supremacy) rule in the early 20th century, and went to war with each other in 1940 (the war never really had a clear end date).
By the time of the American expedition to Britain, in 1948, the island was covered in small plague ridden villages, and filled with cannibals and savages. The chemical douses and small nuclear strikes, meant that a vast area stretching from Northern France to Moscow lacked any semblance of government (even today, Ottoman efforts to set up governments in Germany, Poland, and Italy are somewhat superficial as those areas still have the population density of Iceland). The Swiss (less neutral here), managed to get themselves dragged into the Pan-European War as well.
The Commonwealth of America, had a bit different revolution (it only cut its last ties to the British in the 1830s). It includes OTL Canada, and is slightly more loosely governed than the OTL United States (with land being divided into 7 ‘sub-commonwealths’, as well as the two ‘protectorates’ of French speaking Quebec and Dutch Speaking Oranjia which is basically Long Island and some of coastal New York and New Jersey in our world). It’s more British than the OTL U.S. (think Canada), with a parliamentary democracy (though there are no political parties, and parliament is still often times made up almost entirely of the upper classes). Culturally, it is also more uniform than OTL; Baptism has spread north and become a sort of state-religion, and the nation is whiter than OTL. The Commonwealth is only slightly more democratic than the Ottomans, and increasingly the “Holy War” faction that sees the current stand-off with the Ottomans as one of divine judgment has been causing trouble.
The Russian Christian Republic (fairly socialist and into government planning, but also into emphasizing salvation), and the latest Chinese dynasty (complete with the territories in South-East Asia that it freed from Europeans and turned into vassal states), are the Commonwealth’s two biggest allies. The Chinese don’t really the Americans, and really don’t like the Russians, but they do really hate the Ottomans (some in Constantinople believe that the insurgency in Xinjiang should not be funded, so that China will leave the Pro-American camp). In Europe, the Spanish and Portuguese (lightly hit during the war, and now under military juntas that really demonized the Ottomans) are both very, very Pro-U.S. (this helped by the fact that twice in the late 1700s, the Ottomans and Moroccans almost succeeded in undoing the Reconquista). Britain and France, are de-facto American territories (American efforts at establishing states in what has mostly been reduced to wilderness having gone even worse than Ottoman ones). Ireland, and the Scandinavian nations are cautiously neutral.
Africa, had a hell of a time trying to establish workable states with the sudden collapses of white-minority rule. The Ottomans and Americans both worked hard to pick up the pieces.
The Japanese had a major colonial empire running a while ago (with Hawaii, Australia, and Indonesia), but got beat up by the Chinese and Americans in a war right before the Pan-European War. Today, Noharrandu (Australia, the name comes from the Japanese rendering of New Holland- the Dutch were bigger in this world), and Honolulu (Hawaii), are independent neutral republics.
Socialism has yet to catch on here, though simmering movements might cause it to.
Despite the ongoing struggle, the world is rather calmer. Europe’s even worse self-destruction has made much of the world recoil from the horrors of war, and made a more stable (if more paranoid) world. Ottoman dominance over oil, means that coal, solar, and nuclear energy are all more utilized. Genetics is further behind (the Human genome project has not been completed yet), and the internet has yet to catch on mass cultural popularity, but in general this world is as advanced as our own. World population is only a billion lower than OTL, but there is much more of it in the Middle East and Americas than OTL (making up for Europe’s massive population losses). High speed rail connects cities across an irrigated middle east, and connects Cincinnati (capital of the Commonwealth) to Nieuw-Amsterdam. America, Turkey, and China all have bases on the moon.
The Ottomans are definitely the top military and economic power, although the Americans aren’t too far behind (certainly, when you add up the power of America, China, and Russia, the Ottomans look less good).
